Report: Online training gives employers a big benefit
Filed under: Communication, In this week's e-newsletter, Latest News & Views, Training
Training budgets may be tighter due to the economy, but a recent survey shows companies are trimming some fat by moving their training online.
About 33% of employee training is now conducted online, according to research by the American Society for Training and Development. In 2001, the figure was around 11%.
The reasons companies are moving to e-learning:
- the high costs of hiring a consultant or paying an outside instructor to lead sessions
- reluctance to make employees miss work for training, and
- an influx of young employees who are more comfortable using technology to learn than their predecessors.
As job security becomes harder to come by, more employees cite job training as a desired benefit (read more on that here). For many companies, online programs could be an affordable avenue to deliver training.

This article is correct. We provide on line training to over 17000 users in approximately 32 states. Although the economy is struggling, our business has increased in the past 60 days we have had a tremendous increase in new users. Our training is mainly EEOC/OSHA/FTC Compliance training.
AAA Auto Club South authors online learning for employees to increase product knowledge, i.e. membership levels, member benefits, travel products. We also create software simulations to help employees learn new software applications. In addition to the above, we author training for emergency road service personnel to help them become familar with various metro areas in order for them to help our Members in a more productive manner.
We have certainly increased our development and usage of online training content over the past six years to benefit both the Employees, the Members, and the Club.
I agree, our company began developing online training inhouse in 2006 and it has grown by leaps and bounds since then. It is certainly the best way to deliver crucial content quickly and effeciently. Our training consists of HR policy and procedure courses, compliance training, leadership effectiveness, software or technical training and general soft skills.
A great way to accomplish on-line training in house is to use a software called Camtasia – you can create your power point – run it through camtasia and edit your own video. My company HRFix.com uses this software to customize customers training content for modules such as emergency action plan, (how an emergency will be communicated, where to evacuate, etc… sexual harassment (i.e. who to complain to, etc..) Anyone interested in creating their own inhouse training to put on their server should look at Camtasia – we have used it with over 100 training programs for our clients – it is easy to use and allows you to put the end product video in multiple formats – flash, swf, real, etc…
