Just how much time are they wasting?
Filed under: Employee computer use, HR metrics, In this week's e-newsletter, Latest News & Views
Do your managers want to know how much time employees spend on personal matters while they’re at work? If so, here’s a tool that might help:
It’s called RescueTime, and it’s a program that’s installed on a computer to measure exactly how much time a user spends running different programs and visiting different Web sites.
There’s a free individual version available, as well as a subscription-based business version that lets managers view the total data for an entire team.
Find out more at www.rescuetime.com.

I don’t think managers (me being one) should spend time “peeking” on staff activities throughout the day. My staff appreciates the fact that I’m not monitoring their every move. If the work is getting done when I need it done then for morale purposes – why not let them “goof off” a little. Work is stressful enough and most are underpaid for what they do….give them a break.
Interesting Idea, but a little too scary. I don’t want my activity being sent to a company which could be bought out by unscrupulous investors. I’d rather have a version that keeps the data on my local machine only.
While I know there are always a few “bad apples” in the bunch, for the most part, employees do want to do a good job and to succeed at work. I agree with Helen…if the work is getting done when it needs to be done, monitoring the every move of your employees on the computer just isn’t necessary. And it could significantly hurt morale.
