Alternative to Form I-9 proposed

A new bill that would create an alternative to the E-Verify electronic employment verification system has been introduced to the House of Representatives.

The New Employee Verification Act, written by Reps. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) and Sam Johnson (R-Texas), was introduced to the House on April 22.

If passed, it would require companies to sign up for the Electronic Employee Verification System, which would be based on the new hire reporting systems already used in each state to enforce child support payments. About 90% of employers already use their state’s new hire system, the bill’s backers said.

The electronic verification would replace the Form I-9.

The bill would also create a network of private, government certified worker authentication companies that would use biometric data like fingerprints to verify employment eligibility.

We’ll keep you posted on the bill’s movement.

  2. I think the issue here is timeliness. It can take weeks for the state new hire reporting systems to catch up…by then the employee has been on your payroll for a while. E-verify is first day. By the way, I have zero problems with E-verify and have yet to have any mis-matches.

  4. There’s nothing wrong with EVerify. Works well with first day results. Don’t fix what is not broken.

  10. At last! I’ve been wondering why someone felt we had to reinvent the wheel by coming up with E-Verify when we’re already required to report New Hires by state. All we need is an elegant solution. This is a time-saver. Let’s get rid of the Redundancy Department of Redundancy….
